Use Composite in Stella

Stella is LuciditySH's character chat app. It ships with its own built-in provider and also takes any OpenAI-compatible one. Add Composite as a provider to run your characters on the presets, lorebooks, plugins and memory attached to your Composite key.

Why use Composite in Stella

Stella's built-in provider is the simplest way to chat. Pointing Stella at Composite gives the same characters everything a Composite key carries: a community preset or profile from Discovery, lorebooks and plugins, a memory layer for long chats, the full model catalog with credits or a plan, or your own provider key through BYOK. Stella keeps your characters, personas and chats; Composite only sees the request each reply needs.

Setup steps

  1. Create a Composite account and make a key on the API Keys page.
  2. In Stella, open the provider settings and add a new custom provider.
  3. Paste https://composite.lucidity.sh/v1 as the base URL and your Composite key as the API key.
  4. Pick a model from the list Stella loads. With no provider bound to your key, choose lucidityai/synth-2.5-flash (Synth), which is free.
  5. Set the context size to the model's context length, save, and make the provider active.

Which model Synth is free on every account. Bind the key to your own provider on the API Keys page to use that provider's models at no charge from Composite, or add credits or a plan for the rest of the catalog. The key's preset, lorebooks and memory apply whichever model Stella asks for.

Troubleshooting

No models appear

Stella lists models by asking Composite with your key, so an empty list means the base URL or key is wrong. The base URL must be exactly https://composite.lucidity.sh/v1, with no /chat/completions on the end, and the key must be pasted whole.

429 errors

On Synth, a 429 means today's Synth requests are used up. They reset once a day at the time shown on your account page, and credits or a plan make Synth unlimited. On a key bound to your own provider, a 429 is that provider's rate limit.

Invalid API key

Composite keys start with cmp-. Paste only the key, not a Bearer prefix. If it was deleted or revoked, make a new one on the API Keys page and update the provider in Stella.

Replies forget early events

Stella's context size decides how much history it sends. Set it to the model's context length from the Models page, and pick a memory layer on the key so older turns are summarised rather than dropped.
