Cutting back on roleplay

Roleplay should be something you choose to do, not something you lose evenings to. If you're using it more than you want to, this page covers habits that help, the limits Composite can enforce for you, and how to take a break or leave.

Signs it's taking too much

  • Sessions regularly run hours past when you meant to stop, or into the time you should be asleep.
  • You put off work, school, meals or people to keep a scene going.
  • You're spending more on credits or plans than you're comfortable with.
  • You reach for it whenever you feel lonely, anxious or bored, and feel worse when you can't.
  • You've tried to use it less and found it hard.

One of these on its own isn't a crisis. A few at once is a good reason to change something.

Habits that help

  1. Decide when you'll stop before you start. Set a timer, or pick an end point in the story, and close the app when you reach it.
  2. Stop at a scene break, not a cliffhanger. Wrap up the scene so there's nothing pulling you back.
  3. Keep it out of bed. Late-night sessions are the ones that run longest. Pick a cut-off time.
  4. Notice what you're reaching for. If it's company or comfort, try to also get some of that from people or other things you enjoy.
  5. Make it less convenient. Sign out, remove the key from your phone's apps, or keep it only on one device.

What these can't do Composite has no time limit or lock-out, and Synth stays available on any key you keep. If spending isn't the problem, removing keys is the setting that works.

Taking a break

  1. Remove your Composite key from SillyTavern, JanitorAI or whichever apps you use it in.
  2. On the API Keys page, delete the key. You can make a new one when you come back.
  3. If you have a plan, cancel it under Account, Account. It keeps running until the end of the month you paid for and then doesn't renew.
  4. Turn off automatic recharge. Credits already in your wallet stay there.

Your published assets, creator page and settings stay as they are while you're away.

Stopping completely

If you want a clean break, delete your account from the Danger zone under Account, Account. It's permanent: your keys stop working, and your account, wallet and assets can't be brought back. Before you do, cancel any plan, and download any lorebooks or presets you want to keep as SillyTavern JSON from their pages. The privacy policy lists what is kept after deletion and for how long.

Talking to someone

If cutting back is harder than you expected, or roleplay is filling a gap that's hurting, talking to a friend, a doctor or a counsellor helps. Find A Helpline lists free, confidential support lines by country. If you're in danger or thinking about hurting yourself, call your local emergency number.
